In the arts ecology, a review serves several roles at once:

citation for the artists who made it
peer response from someone thinking seriously about the form
a coordinate in the longer conversation criticism holds with itself

Without reviews, independent work leaves no record of having existed.

Criticism is labour.

A striptease where the bazongas are jokes, a country auctioneer badgering the audience through wanky meta-layers, and a performer you’d pay to read you a telephone book. 4.5 stars, with pasties still hiding something.
