About Hugo Ceran-Jerusalemy

Hugo Ceran-Jerusalemy is a composer, instrumentalist and music educator currently studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

His music explores the intersection of music with culture and narrative, reflecting on his own diverse background as a Jewish and Polynesian music practitioner.

Art, Activism and Diplomacy

Hugo's work is strongly interested in themes of Australian history and politics, recognising the intrinsic link between art and activism, and for music as a vehicle of expressing community identity.

Outside of his composition work, Hugo explores how music can be used to connect with different diasporas, between cultures and as a path for diplomacy.

Recognition and Performance

Hugo's compositions have received praise, including his work The Turtle and the Moon as winner of the 2026 UNSW Juvenis-Corde Prize and his 2025 piece A Bug's Life as winner of the Sydney University Musical Society Composition Competition.

Hugo's orchestral and chamber music has also been widely performed, including selection by the Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra for its 2026 South America Tour.

Beyond Music

Hugo's hobbies include reading Australian political biography, writing musicals, jamming with his friends and hanging out with his dog, Trixie.
